Gor Mahia head coach Charles Akonnor has revealed the tactical game plan that enabled the league leaders to earn an easy win against defending champions Kenya Police FC in a league fixture played on Sunday, November 9, 2025, at the Nyayo National Stadium.

Felix Oluoch and Musa Shariff were all on the scoresheet in the first half of the encounter as K’Ogalo took a commanding lead against the Police side at a fairly packed Nyayo Stadium.

The particular 2-0 win took the record Kenyan Premier League winners to the top of the table with 16 points, after starting the season on a losing note against Bidco United.

Reflecting on the masterplan that worked perfectly for Gor Mahia, Charles Akonnor has revealed that the technical bench decided to change their formation against their Sunday’s opponent, expressing delight in the changes that bore fruit at last.

Tactical master plan

”It was special because we saw how our opponent plays, normally we play with a 4-3-3 formation, but we decided to play 3-5-2 to put pressure on them, and it worked in the first half,” Akonnor said in his post-match remarks.

Gor Mahia grabbed their first win against Police FC in two years, as Akonnor also praised the team for remaining tactically disciplined, despite facing a tough opponent. He added that the team planned to get the job done in the first half of the fixture, then manage the game in the second half.

”In the second half, we just came to manage the game. We saw them coming with long balls, but we were not too worried at all. We managed to work it out as we wanted in the first half; we knew their weakness. We were tactically disciplined, and it gave us two early goals,” Akonnor added.

K’Ogalo psyched up

Earlier, before the match, defender Sylvester Owino was adamant that K’Ogalo were ready and psyched up for the fixture. Owino revealed that Gor Mahia sought to bounce back to their winning ways after dropping points against Ulinzi Stars in their previous outing.

”Being that we did not get maximum points in our previous game, I think the boys are psyched up to ensure we get maximum points in our next match against Kenya Police. There is not much pressure, but as a team, we always want to concede fewer goals come the end of the season, so we will continue working towards that,” Owino said.
