Charles Akonnor appointed new Gor Mahia head coach
Gor Mahia FC has unveiled former Ghana national team coach Charles Akonnor as its new head coach, signalling a fresh chapter for the record Kenyan Premier League champions.
The appointment was officially announced on Friday afternoon, August 1, 2025, via the club’s social media platforms.
“We are delighted to announce the appointment of Charles Akonnor from Ghana as our new Head Coach. The former Black Stars manager brings a wealth of experience as a seasoned tactician. Welcome to Mahia, Coach Akonnor,” read a post from the club’s official X account dated August 1, 2025.
Akonnor, 51, takes over on a two-year contract.
The Ghanaian arrives with a decorated resume both as a former player and coach, having captained the Black Stars and featured prominently for Bundesliga side VfL Wolfsburg between 1998 and 2003, making 121 appearances and scoring 13 goals.

Focus on structure, youth, and long-term success
Speaking upon arrival in Nairobi, Akonnor laid out his vision for the team. “I have set my goals for the club and will be working with all stakeholders to achieve the success needed. We need to set up a solid team that can achieve the best, and we will work together towards a common goal,” he said.
A strong believer in youth development, Akonnor stressed the importance of investing in future talent. “Having a good youth team in place is very important for the club… Developing players through the ranks is quite vital, and I am a believer in working through the stages to achieve the best, not quick fixes for success,” he added.
Gor Mahia’s technical bench will also benefit from a robust backroom team. Ghanaian assistant coach Kobi-Mensah Bismark, formerly with Bechem United and Great Olympics, has signed a two-year deal and emphasised discipline and structure as key pillars of success.
He will be joined by video analyst Joshua Kofi Boafo and goalkeeping coach Owu Ben, a former player with Asante Kotoko and Medeama SC.
The medical department has also been strengthened with the appointment of Brian Odongo, a sports medicine specialist, who will oversee player fitness and welfare throughout the season.
With the new season approaching, Gor Mahia is aiming not just to reclaim domestic supremacy but also to make a significant impact on the continental stage. The club will be counting on Akonnor’s tactical depth and continental experience to steer the team toward success in both the FKF Premier League and the CAF Champions League.
