CHAN 2024: McCarthy announces Kenya’s provisional squad
Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy has unveiled a 32-man squad to do duty for the upcoming 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) jointly hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania
The tournament featuring locally based players will kick off on Saturday, August 2, 2025.
Faruk Shikalo leads the fray of those entrusted with the goalkeeping duties. The member of the Harambee Stars 2019 AFCON team is joined by Sebastian Wekesa of Kariobangi Sharks and Tusker’s Brian Opondo.
Meanwhile, KCB youngster Manzur Mohammed has been included among the ten players tasked with defensive responsibilties for the tournament.
Three debutants
Okwaro is joined by debutants Pamba Swaleh, Staphod Odhiambo and Yakeen Muteheli, the trio being the new faces to the national team.
Others in the defensive department include left back Abud Omar, Gor Mahia duo Alphonce Omija and Sylvester Owino. Daniel Sakari, Siraj Mohammed, and Lewis Bandi of AFC Leopards.
The midfield will be marshalled by Brian Musa of Kenya Police, KCB’s Mathews Isogol, AFC Leopards Kelly Madada Okonji, and Gor’s midfield trio of Alpha Onyango, Ben Stanley Omondi and Austin Odhiambo.
In the striking department, McCarthy has entrusted the goal-getting duties to the newly crowned FKF PL top scorer, Moses Shumah.
Shumah, Osoro to lead attack
The Kakamega Homeboyz talisman, who finished atop the league scoring charts with 17 goals, has been handed the nod alongside his close challengers in the race for the Golden Boot.
Shumah is joined by Talanta’s poacher Emannuel Osoro, Tusker Ryan Ogam, Beja Nyamawi, David Sakwa, Mohammed Bajaber, Ryan Ogam, and little-known Muteheli Yakeen.

Harambee Stars, who are pooled in Group A comprising five teams, will open their campaign against the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) on Sunday, August 3, 2025.
The clash against former hosts of the competition will pave the way for a second test against Angola on Thursday, August 7, 2025.
