Kenya Volleyball Federation champions General Service Unit (GSU) dominated the individual players’ awards as the Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) came to a close on Sunday, June 8, 2025.

GSU won the championship after narrowly defeating the Portmen in the decisive Game 3 tie on Sunday.

The two teams traded wins in the first two games on Friday and Saturday, with the Mombasa-based team fighting back to claim game 2 after losing the opener on Friday.

The Gideon Tarus-coached team earned five slots of the seven-player team as per the list of the most outstanding players from the revealed roster.

Nicholas Matui led the team’s best performers list with a well-earned Most Valuable Player (MVP).

Matui’s all-around display proved pivotal to the paramilitary team shooting to a record 16th title.

He was joined by teammates Hudson Kipchumba, Shadrack Misiko, Naftali Chumba and Mathias Kemboi.

Kipchumba claimed the men’s team best libero, while Misiko, who played a crucial role in GSU’s defence throughout the season, took home the best middle blocker award.

Chumba, following his explosive spikes, was crowned the best outside hitter.

Kemboi wrapped up the team’s dominance with the best setter crown.

Finalist Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) earned two slots in the ultimate dream team, with Chris Owalla named the best server.

His teammate Peter Kamara also joined the party as the best opposite player.

Speaking after the loss, KPA captain Dennis Omollo said they hope to make amends when they renew their rivalry in the upcoming Kenya Cup finals.

“We meet GSU again in the Kenyan Cup. We look forward to challenging them in the tournament and seeing if we can get a victory over them,’ he said.

On his part, losing finalist coach John Ontere, who saw the team lose against GSU after a defeat in the African Men’s Volleyball Championship in Misruta, Libya, blamed the loss on lethargy.

Ontere held that his team exhausted their energy reserves after forcing a win in game two to force the tie to Sunday’s decider.

“We suffered several tired legs in the team. We pushed ourselves too hard in Saturday’s game, and it effects showed in today’s game. We tried to change the team, but it proved not enough today,” he opined.

The win saw the paramilitary club under skipper Danson Tall, reclaim the title they lost two years ago.
