After the first two intriguing fixtures in both Group A and B, the Council for East and Central Africa Football Association (CECAFA) Women’s Clubs championships, enters its final group phase today, with four entertaining matchups at Nyayo and Kasarani Stadiums respectively.

A confident Vihiga Queens side, who thrashed hapless Yei Joint Stars of South Sudan 11-0 on Wednesday, are in a bullish mood as they get ready to take on group whipping girls, and already eliminated New Generations of Zanzibar at Nyayo Stadium from 4pm.

However, Vihiga Queens’ assistant coach Boniface Nyamunyamu has urged his team not to be carried away by the huge win against Yei, which is so far the tournament’s highest scoreline and turn all their attention to today’s match against the Zanzibar side.

“We started badly our campaign after losing 4-2 to Commercial Bank of Ethiopia. It was heartbreaking but the win against Yei of South Sudan on Wednesday has really motivated us to work even harder.

So, I’m urging the girls to remain focused and avoid complacency going into our final group phase match, because it’s also crucial that we win the match to secure our spot in the semifinals,” said Vihiga Queens assistant coach Boniface Nyamunyamu.

Group leaders

As Vihiga play New Generations at Nyayo, group leaders Commercial Bank of Ethiopia who are red-hot and tournament’s favourite title contender will be locking horns with Yei Joint Stars at Kasarani, seeking to wrap Group B unbeaten, while Yei will be out to bounce back, and win the encounter to fancy their slim chances of qualifying for the semifinals.

Today’s action will kick-off with Group A early matches slated from 1 pm, also at Nyayo and Moi International Sports Center (MISC) Kasarani Stadiums respectively.

From the group, Lady Doves of Uganda and Simba Queens of Tanzania, have one foot each in the semifinal stage after collecting four points apiece following their barren draw on Tuesday, and only need to draw in their ties today to advance to the last four.

Both teams started the tournament brightly with Lady Doves humbling FAD FC of Djibouti 5-0 on Saturday while Simba Queens beat PVP FC of Burundi 4-1, the same day.

PVP bounced back to beat FAD 2-1 on Tuesday but their hopes of advancing are slim considering that they are going to face group leaders Lady Doves from 1 pm local time at Nyayo Stadium.

In the other Group A match, FAD FC of Djibouti who have already been eliminated from the tournament by losing both of their opening matches will be taking on Simba Queens of Tanzania from Kasarani Stadium, also in a 1 pm local time encounter in what’s a formality fixture for the Djiboutians.
