CAF to pay Kenya prize money for reaching quarter finals

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is set to pay Harambee Stars millions more for getting to the CHAN 2024 quarter finals.

Speaking during a live TV interview on Sunday, August 24, 2025, Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Hussein Mohammed said that CAF has confirmed to the FKF that the money will soon be disbursed.

Mohammed, however, indicated that the entire prize money would not directly go to the players, but would be used to settle penalties incurred by FKF and the expenses involved during the entire period of the tournament.

Quarter finals prize money

“Of course, we made it to the quarter finals, so that comes with the prize money. However, during the competition, we also had quite a number of incidents and Kenya was sanctioned and we were penalized in various ways, among them financial penalties and fan restrictions,” Mohammed said.

So far, Mohammed revealed that the total fines owed to CAF were close to Ksh13 million. During this period, the restrictions on the number of fans allowed to attend matches are also seen to have greatly impacted the revenue collections.

“So, we have to put all that into consideration as well; that money has to come from somewhere, and the total fine is around Ksh13 million in penalties,” Mohammed said.

Pending cases

Mohammed also observed that FKF had appealed one of the cases and was awaiting the outcome of the appeal.

“We have appealed to CAF on one of those cases, and we have 60 days within which to make those payments. We have also been notified by CAF on what the prize money is and when it will be due for the country,” Mohammed said.

He indicated that the money would be used to settle all pending expenses before the players and members of the technical bench are considered.

“The prize money from this competition comes to the federation, which will then prioritize because success is all-inclusive. There are certain components that we must take into account in terms of our costs, then we will be able to make a decision based on what is left,” he stated.
