CAF Champions League: high-profile showdowns to headline matchday 3
CAF Champions League matchday three actions have been spread across three days, with top-level sides set to clash.
Champions League giants Al Ahly of Egypt will host Algeria’s CR Belouizdad in a late afternoon kick-off in Cairo in what is expected to be a high-octane duel.
This is a clash of Group D titans, as only one point separates them at the top; Al Ahly have four in a group that also has Medeama Stars of Ghana and Tanzania Mainland Premier League giants Yanga SC.
Yanga are in Ghana, ready to take on their West African rivals, and the Tanzanian giants must win to have any chance of progressing to the next phase of the competition.
Struggling Casablanca
Wydad Casablanca have endured a rather tough group stage campaign and are yet to pick a point. The former Champions League winners will face Simba after their shock defeat at home to Botswana’s Jwaneng Galaxy before another surprise loss to ASEC Mimosas.
Angola’s Petro Luanda will be in Tunisia to tackle ES Tunis, and this is expected to be another high-level showdown given that the Angolan outfit is at the summit of their group.
Petro Luanda saw off both ES Sahel and Al Hilal, and their main target is a third victory against their group rivals.
African Football League champions Mamelodi Sundowns will battle Egypt Premier League side Pyramids, while DR Congo giants TP Mazembe have been scheduled to take on Nouadhibou, who won their last game against Pyramids.
