Boxing Federation of Kenya president Anthony “Jamal” Ombok wants the status quo at the National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOC-K) to continue when the body goes to polls next month.

Jamal says the team led by president Paul Tergat, who is set to face the November 16 elections unopposed, has done a good and therefore deserve another term.

“As the boxing federation, we are not complaining because for once our needs have been taken care of. NOC-K has really walked with us throughout the journey. So we want to vote on the team that Tergat wishes to work with,” said Jamal.

He adds that the current office holders have proved that they can deliver and therefore need more time.

“We are in talks with NOC-K and Tergat is particular, he knows he has our full support,” he added.

Election cycle

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) will preside over the elections, which are due to take place next month when 13 positions will be up for grabs.

NOC-K affiliate members were invited to nominate an electoral body earlier this year.

IEBC will focus on holding transparent and inclusive elections as potential candidates and voters were shown the basic requirements to participate by the electoral body.

“I think our wish is to see elections are conducted properly and with due diligence.

Right now we can only ask the candidates to  demonstrate sobriety, maturity, and mutual respect in every engagement and deliberations while we do our legitimate canvassing for votes,” added Jamal.

The NOC-K election cycle runs in tandem with the Olympiad. 

With the Tokyo 2020 Olympics delayed by a year, the NOC-K elections were also pushed back to 2021.
