Bidco United stun Gor Mahia in chaotic FKF Premier League opener
Gor Mahia’s 2025/26 FKF Premier League campaign began on a sour note as they suffered a 1-0 defeat to Bidco United at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, on Sunday.
The loss marked a disappointing start to what was supposed to be a new era under head coach Charles Akonnor.
The match was played in front of a strong crowd, but the build-up was overshadowed by chaos at the gates. Police clashed with sections of Gor Mahia fans before kick-off, lobbing tear gas as tensions flared outside the stadium. Videos shared on social media showed fans scampering for safety, with some jumping over fences to gain entry. After a few minutes of unrest, the situation calmed, and supporters were eventually allowed into the stadium under police watch.
On the pitch, Akonnor’s men struggled to settle into their rhythm despite enjoying possession. Bidco, well organised at the back, frustrated K’Ogalo and restricted them to half chances. The first half ended goalless, leaving the home fans expectant of a stronger second-half display.

Bidco punish Gor late
The breakthrough, however, came for the visitors late in the game. In the 86th minute, Gor Mahia conceded a penalty after a clumsy foul inside the box. Bidco forward calmly converted from the spot, silencing the Kasarani crowd and handing the Thika-based side a crucial lead. Despite a late push from Gor, Bidco held firm to secure all three points.
Gor Mahia’s defeat also followed a 2-0 loss to Tanzanian giants Simba SC in a high-profile friendly earlier this month. The match, part of the annual Simba Day celebrations in Dar es Salaam, saw Hamza Mohammed and Steven Mukwala score for the hosts. Despite the setback, Akonnor praised his players’ second-half response and said the contest provided valuable lessons ahead of the new season.

It was a harsh reminder for Akonnor of the task ahead. The Ghanaian coach, formerly in charge of the Black Stars, was appointed after a dismal 2024/25 season in which Gor Mahia went trophyless for the first time since 2016. His arrival, coupled with several new signings, had raised hopes of a quick revival. Yet, the opening fixture showed that the road to reclaiming past glory may not be straightforward.
The match also extended Bidco United’s impressive record against Gor Mahia. The two teams have met regularly in recent seasons, with Bidco often proving to be a difficult opponent. Their discipline and ability to capitalise on key moments again caused trouble for the record 21-time champions.
