Kenya Badminton players will be the biggest casualties after the federation’s two warring factions failed to settle on a single team for the forthcoming All African Games to be held in Morocco.

The decision to lock out the federation was made by  Sports Disputes Tribunal last week who quashed the badminton squad for the Games that will be in held in four Moroccan cities – Rabat, Casablanca, El Jadida and Khemisset from August 19-31.

The order by the tribunal that a fresh team be picked in strict conformity and adherence to the procedures, means the body will not be among the 22 Kenyan disciplines for the Games, with time having run out for teams entry.

Badminton players such as Sheila Gakii, Edwin Waitathu and Loice Andia had accused Badminton Kenya of picking a team that did not fulfil the requirements set up in the selection policy.

“Given where we are coming from as a federation, I fear we are on the verge of attracting sanctions from the International Badminton Federation,” said one player who sought anonymity.

“When there are individuals with conflicting interests, players are going to suffer, as we speak all the other Kenyan contingent is in camp preparing for the Games,” said another player. Early this year the international body had written to the local federation to have their house in order and conduct her elections.

Badminton Kenya was set to hold its election on April 27 after getting the green light from the Registrar of Sports, polls that never happened.

The elections were earmarked for last year June but were put on hold by the Sports Registrar until the Badminton Association duly complied with the Sports Act.

The delay in the elections and now selection of two different squads for Team Kenya has also been fuelled by the two warring factions.
