AK National Championship: Omanyala and Mutinda bag gold in eventful finale

Africa’s fastest man, Ferdinand Omanyala, was at his cruising best, claiming gold in the men’s 100 meters as the curtain fell on the thrilling 2025 Athletics Kenya National Championships, held at the Ulinzi Sports Complex in Lang’ata on Friday, June 27, 2025.

Omanyala clocked 10.08 seconds to blaze to victory in the category, pipping Steve Onyango and Meshack Babu, who came second and third, respectively.

The sprinter was, however, forced to contend with a second place in the men’s 200 m race after finishing behind Zablon Ekwam of the Kenyan Defense Forces in the 200 m race.

Omanyala’s National Police Service (NPS) teammate, Denis Mwai, claimed bronze.

KDF dominates

The women’s 200 m race went to Milicent Ndoro, who delivered a standout performance, surging to victory ahead of Esther Mbagari of Kenya Prisons.

The event brought together elite athletes from the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), National Police Service (NPS), Kenya Prisons Service (KPS), various regions, universities, and other institutions.

KDF dominated the winners category, with the National Police Service delivering a commanding performance, coming in second place, just ahead of the Kenya Prisons, which claimed third place.

In the men’s 400 m, George Mutinda Mutunga led the police’s 1 and 2 sweep of the podium, finishing ahead of Brian Tinega and Kevin Kipkorir.

Mutinda recorded an impressive 44.51 seconds to clinch victory. The fast-rising star outpaced Tinega, who finished second in 44.67 s, while Kipkorir of the Prisons team claimed third in 44.80 s.

The performance assured the trio of qualification for the World Championships in the category.

Yego, Irene claim wins in javelin

Meanwhile, Mary Nyaruai Ekiru was unstoppable in the women’s 1500m, crossing the finish line well ahead of the pack. In the men’s 1500m, Reynold Cheruiyot claimed gold, while teammate Abel Kipsang delivered a strong finish to earn bronze.

Javelin star Julius Yego and his national police teammate, Irene Chepkemoi, proved too good in the field event, capturing gold in the men’s and women’s finals, respectively.

Kelvin Kiplagat out-sprinted Daniel Ebenyo of the National Police to win the men’s 10,000m final.

The Central Rift runner served the upset to Ebenyo as Meshack Kimutai, also from Central Rift, came in at third.
