AFC Leopards’ push for top-four finish suffers a blow as Sofapaka frustrate them in tense goalless draw

AFC Leopards surrendered their grip on fourth place after being held to a nil-all draw by Sofapaka in the much-anticipated ‘Cats Derby’ at Dandora Stadium on Wednesday, a result that allowed KCB to reclaim the spot with a narrow 1-0 victory over Bandari.
The outcome saw Ingwe relinquish their fourth spot as KCB, who managed a 1-0 win against Bandari, reclaimed it.
AFC Leopards are now fifth on the 18-team league table with 34 points from 21 matches, while Sofapaka dropped to eighth with 29 points from 22 matches.
Sofapaka coach Ezekiel Akwana was left unimpressed with how his players showed up for the game, insisting that their performance was not what he had instructed them to do.
“We never showed up, really. We didn’t play according to instructions, and again, we wasted many chances. We must work on our striking force; it was our main undoing. But overall, we are happy to get a point from a tough team like AFC Leopards,” said Akwana.
Meanwhile, the Bankers scored a seventh-minute goal courtesy of Joshua Nyathini to floor the visiting Dockers 1-0.
The win enabled them to leapfrog Ingwe into fourth place, where they now sit with 35 points from 25 matches.
The Bankers have secured nine wins, eight draws, and suffered four defeats. For Bandari, the defeat saw them drop to sixth with 32 points, accumulated from eight wins, eight draws, and six defeats.
After their 5-0 win against Nairobi City Stars last time out, high-flying Kakamega Homeboyz maintained their resurgence under head coach Francis Baraza following their 3-1 victory against visiting Murang’a Seal at Mumias Complex.
Man of the moment Moses Shumah put Homeboyz ahead in the 17th minute before doubling the lead in the 38th minute, earning a brace from the fixture.
Lucas Maina pulled a goal back for Murang’a Seal in first-half stoppage time to ignite hopes of a comeback in the second period.
However, it was Homeboyz who had the last laugh when Oliver Majak scored with seven minutes left on the clock to secure maximum points. Following two consecutive wins, Homeboyz jumped to sixth with 33 points, garnered from eight wins, nine draws, and five defeats.
The defeat left Murang’a Seal sitting 13th with 23 points from 22 matches.
In another match, Posta Rangers scored first but failed to protect their lead as they settled for a 1-1 draw against promoted side Mara Sugar.
Faustin Ojiambo put Posta ahead in the 32nd minute, but Mara responded in the 42nd minute when Raila Christopher bundled home from close range following an assist from Curtis Wekesa.
Elsewhere, Ulinzi Stars failed to break down Kariobangi Sharks as the two sides settled for a 0-0 draw.
