Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League giants AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia have been slapped with heavy fines following the crowd violence that rocked the Mashemeji Derby at Nyayo Stadium on April 21.

According to a demand letter from the Sports Stadia Management Board signed by Director General Pius Metto and copied to AFC Leopards chairman Dan Shikanda dated April 30th, 2024, Ingwe have also been banned from using Nyayo Stadium until they settle their fine.

Gor Mahia, who were the home team, were fined Sh126,000 while Ingwe, the away team, will have to pay Ksh505,450 for the damages caused to the match venue before and at the end of the derby.

“Reference is made to the match between AFC Leopards and Gor Mahia that was held at Nyayo National Stadium on Sunday 21st April 2024. During and after the match, the fans from both teams caused destruction to the Stadium property,” read part of the statement from the Stadia Management Board.

“Attached herewith is a schedule of the damages and the relevant costs apportioned to each team as per our assessment. This is therefore to implore you to take full responsibility and pay the damages and losses thereof as a result of the destruction by the fans of your club.”

The letter continued: “This is, therefore, to implore you to take full responsibility and pay the damages and losses thereof as a result of destruction by the fans of your club.

“Please also note that AFC Leopards is hereby banned from using any Sports Kenya facility, whether home or away until the damages are fully paid for and the matter is completely addressed.”

During the 95th derby, Gor Mahia came out as winners after an Austin Odhiambo goal enabled them to win 1-0 and stretch their lead at the summit of the 18-team table to nine points. The win also saw K’Ogalo seal a double over their bitter rivals having won the first round meeting 2-0 at Kasarani Stadium in October.

With seven league matches to conclude the season, Ingwe will now be forced to get an alternative venue to host their remaining home matches. The home matches include – against Bandari FC on May 5, against Kenya Police on May 15, against Bidco United on May 19, and KCB on June 19.

Ingwe, who are chasing for the Mozzart Bet Cup having reached the semi-finals following their 3-1 victory against division one side Compel FC in the quarter-finals, are out of the race to win the league title following their poor start to the campaign.

They are currently sitting eighth on the log with 38 points from 27 matches, having registered nine wins, 11 draws, and suffered seven defeats.
