FIFA referee Peter Kamaku will lead a team of Kenyan referees tasked with officiating a crucial round of 16 clash pitting Cameroon against South Africa this Sunday, January 4, 2025, in Morocco.

The clash to be staged at the Al Medina Stadium will kick off at 22:00 pm.

Sunday action will be Kamaku’s third assignment in the championship and his first as the round of 16 clashes continue with a couple of fixtures on the cards.

Kamaku will be assisted by Gilbert Cheruiyot and Stephen Eleazer Yiembe as the two match assistant referees.

DR Congo’s Jean Jacques Ndala will act as the match’s fourth official, with Danile Nii Ayi Laryea being in charge of the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) duties.

Previous assignments

The trio was previously involved in overseeing the Group B tie pitting Angola against Zimbabwe at the Stade de Marrakech on Friday, December 26, 2025.

Another Kenyan official, Dickens Mimisa, was in charge of the VAR duties in the controversial group tie pitting South Africa against Egypt that ended with the Pharaohs edging the Bafana Bafana 1-0 to advance to the knockout stages.

Prior to these assignments, Kamaku also served as the fourth official in the South Africa vs. Angola match, which ended 2–1 in favour of South Africa.

The other round of 16 ties slated for Sunday will see North African giants Morocco lock horns against neighbours Tanzania, who earned their maiden qualification to the knockout stages in this year’s edition with a draw against Tunisia in their final group clash.

On Saturday, Mali’s goalkeeper, Djigui Diarra, claimed the match plaudits after his incredible performance of two vital penalty saves inspired the Eagles’ advance to the AFCON 2025 quarter-finals with victory over Tunisia.

Tom Saintifiet’s team is now gearing up for a challenging clash against the tournament favourites, Senegal, in the next round.

Senegal’s Lions of Teranga is another country that has qualified for the next rounds.
