Nandi County Senator Samson Cherargei has told his Busia County counterpart Okiya Omtatah to use the senate to champion the release of abducted individuals.

On Monday, December 30, 2024, Omtatah was among the people who staged demonstrations in Nairobi’s city centre and clashed with the police. Now, Cherargei wants the senator-cum-activist to use his senatorial platform to push for the release of the missing people and not to use the streets.

“To my brother senator omtata the people of Busia county elected you to be the senator of the Republic of kenya my advice convince the senate to hold a special sitting to allow all of us to summon IG , NIS , IPOA and DCI to be held accountable of this heinous lapses of security.

“You have a better platform to champion victims’ rights than illegal demonstrations. Akili mtu wangu,” Cherargei said in a statement on X posted on Monday, December 30, 2024.

Cherargei added that his hope is that those missing will soon rejoin their families alive.

“I hope and pray the young Kenyans who were abducted (by) pedestrian criminals shall be found safe and be able to join their families during this festive season,” the senator added.

LSK’s call

Cherargei’s statement comes as the Law Society of Kenya asked for the release of the abducted.

“The President’s undertaking that all those that have been abducted will be released is a confirmation that the @NPSOfficial_KE has in its custody all the individuals reported as abducted. The ignorance feigned by the @IG_NPS must, therefore, come to an end.

“We call for the immediate release of all those abducted. We continue to take detailed accounts of all acts of aggression and repression against the people.

“As we call on the police to act in accordance with the constitution, we invite members of the public to report all incidences of actions to the contrary through our provided channels,” LSK’s President Faith Odhiambo said in a statement on her X account.

Police are expected to be put under a renewed spotlight given how they handled the demonstrators.
