Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga on Sunday, February 16, 2025, continued to receive messages following his election defeat for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairmanship race.

Raila was beaten by Djibouti’s candidate Mahmoud Ali Youssouf following several rounds of voting cutting short his dream of ascending at the helm of the continental body.

In a statement, Kingi told Raila that the loss proved he was bigger and more qualified to occupy that AUC chairmanship position.

The Senate speaker added that despite the loss, the former prime minister was still treasured in the country and went ahead to welcome him back.

“Warmest congratulations to Raila Odinga for the spirited contest on behalf of Kenya. This isn’t a loss. It’s a confirmation that you are just too big for this seat. You remain our pride,” Kingi’s message read in part.

Karibu Nyumbani Baba,” it added.

Raila says he is not sad

Kingi’s message comes hours after Raila conceded defeat and told the nation that he was not sad.

Speaking in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Raila welcomed the decision and indicated that he was available to serve the continent in a different capacity.

“When you go to a contest, there can only be two outcomes—you can win or you can lose. So this is one of them,” Raila said.

“Therefore, I am not bitter; I am very happy indeed. I am still available to offer services to the continent in any other capacity,” he added.

Regarding his plans, Raila hinted at a return to Kenyan politics.

“My plan now is to go back home. I have numerous things to do there,” he said.

Ruto accepts results

President William Ruto who actively campaigned for Kenya’s candidate also accepted the outcome of the polls. He vowed that Kenya would continue to play an active role in African affairs.

“This election was not about individuals or nations; it was about Africa’s future. That future remains bright, and together, we will continue working for a united, prosperous, and influential Africa on the global stage.”
