Wetang’ula reveals next political step after serving as National Assembly speaker
Moses Wetang’ula has explained that he will only be seeking a higher political office in his next political bid after serving as the speaker of the 13th National Assembly.
Wetang’ula, who has declared his interest in succeeding President William Ruto when his tenure ends, stated that he will not fall into the trend of certain politicians of seemingly going after a different political office of a lower rank after serving in other capacities, such as governor or senator.
“I am looking to do better things ahead. I have seen people running for MPs or senators after serving as governor. You will not see me running for governor or MP. I now can only go up and not back,” he clarified.
Ford Kenya discord
He also addressed the simmering discord within his Ford Kenya party, downplaying the loss in his home ward of Kabuchai-Chwele, where Independent Erick Weksa trounced his preferred and the party’s candidate, Vincent Maunda, for the Member of County Assembly ward seat.

“Just watch Ford Kenya’s development in the coming elections. Politics is very dynamic. I am confident of the party’s trust in its leadership and our abilities, and we are focused on the tasks ahead,” he stated.
Spearheading Luhya Unity
His remarks come after he expressed his readiness to spearhead discussion and coalition-making efforts aimed at leveraging the community’s numbers for greater political impact.
He further added that he would be willing to back a different candidate within the community, asserting that his bid is far from a selfish venture.
“I want to be a president; I am sure Musalia also wants it, and many others too. When the time comes, we will talk, and I will lead the talks. I am not selfish.
“With time, things will evolve. In 2002, we did not caucus or retreat to say we would support Wamalwa; he emerged, and we walked within. So when the right comes, it will happen, and I will urge my brothers and rally forces,” he said.
This comes after he also dismissed a recent poll putting him and Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi behind Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya in the Luhya popularity rankings.
