A Nairobi businessman has filed a case at the Small Claims Court in Nairobi against National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula over a Sh298,000 debt he allegedly has refused to settle.

The businessman, Isokat Bethwel, through his lawyer Ashioya Mogire filed a claim seeking court’s intervention to get paid the money for the sale of two dogs.

Isokat, in an affidavit, says he sought legal intervention after his efforts to secure payment from the speaker since 2021 failed.

He states that on or about June 11, 2021, Wetang’ula orally contracted him to sell to him two male German shepherd dogs and train them for one month.

Wetangula is said to have requested Isokat to supply to him four packets of dog food, a dog training sleeve, four pieces of dog leash and choke chains, four pieces of dog grooming brushes, one piece of a dog nail clipper, five litres of dog shampoo, five litres of Kennel disinfectant and two pieces of dog harness all valued at Sh348,000.

Wetangula further requested the claimant to train his staff in handling the dogs for one month at a cost of Sh50,000.

He also stated that on or about July 13, 2021, Wetang’ula paid him a total of Sh100,000 through a cheque from NCBA Bank and remained with a balance of Sh248,100 which he is yet to pay.

Following several attempts to recover the balance, Wetangula “rudely and adamantly informed me that he would not pay me the balance,” Isokat states.

The matter was mentioned yesterday.
