National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula gave a detailed account of his last meeting with the late Cyrus Jirongo during the burial in Lumakanda on Tuesday, December 30, 2025.

His remarks came after leaders urged him to explain his discussions with Jirongo in the days leading to the former Lugari MP’s death.

“Nimekuja hapa kufariji familia ya rafiki yangu. Namueshimu Rais wetu Mstaafu, ndugu yangu Musalia, viongozi wote mlioko hapa na waheshimiwa wananchi, more importantly, familia ya rafiki yetu,” Wetang’ula said.

He described Jirongo as a close friend for more than 38 years.

“Ndugu yangu Jirongo amekuwa rafiki wangu kwa miaka zaidi ya 38. nikiwa rafiki yake, nikiwa wakili wake na saa zingine tukifanya biashara kidogo kidogo hapa na pale. Tunatembeleana.”

Frequent meetings

Wetang’ula recounted their frequent evening meetings in Karen, where they would sit together, discuss matters, and catch up after work.

“Jioni mara mingi huwa tunakaa pamoja kule Karen, akimaliza kazi nikimaliza kazi tunakutana, tunaongea, mawili matatu, tunawachana,” he said.

He also shared the events leading to their last meeting. On December 6, 2025, Wetang’ula travelled to Uganda for parliamentary business. While there, Jirongo called him, saying he wanted to meet.

“Akaniambia alitaka kuniona. Nikamwambia nikirudi nitakutafuta,” Wetang’ula said.

Upon returning on December 11, 2025, he attended a family funeral in Bungoma and then immediately contacted Jirongo to arrange a meeting in Nairobi.

“Niko Nairobi na tunaweza kutana. Akasema tukutane Karen saa kumi na mbili njioni kwenda mbele kwa sababu niko na shughuli,” he added.

Wetang’ula arrived at the agreed meeting place. He met Jirongo and General Tuwei of Athletics Kenya.

“Saa mbili na robo nikafika mahali ya mluya mwenzetu anaitwa Malala. Baada dakika kumi na tano Cyrus akafika tukaketi watu watatu. Mimi, Cyrus na General Tuwei wa Athletics Kenya,” Wetang’ula said.

He explained that they had a short discussion, as he needed to attend another funeral in Mombasa.

During the conversation, Jirongo mentioned noticing George Khaniri and his wife arriving nearby. Wetang’ula left the meeting shortly after 9:30 pm.

Shocking news hits Wetang’ula

The next morning, he received the shocking news of Jirongo’s death in a car accident.

“Asubuhi nikamuka saa moja kwenda Mombasa, kijana yangu ambaye bibi yake ni cousin ya mama Mama Lanoi, akakuja akaniambia daddy pole sana. Niliuliza kwanini nilikuwa naye jana jioni, akasema amekufa kwa accident,” Wetang’ula said.

“It hit me like a thunderbolt. It hit me like a missile, because wengi tumeeongea, Jirongo was personal to me as a friend. Tumesaidiana, tumefanya kazi pamoja, and I can tell you Jirongo was a man.”

Wetangula’s account highlighted their close friendship and the personal side of Jirongo. The speech came amid increased scrutiny over the circumstances of his death.

Khalwale had pressed Wetangula to clarify what they discussed, while George Khaniri revealed that private investigators had analysed CCTV footage showing Jirongo was not alone in his car shortly before the crash.

Saboti MP Caleb Amisi also criticised the government for remaining silent and called on Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi to confront President William Ruto over unanswered questions.

“Mimi nawaomba wale wako kwa serikali. Mnajua mimi siko huko,” Amisi said. “Musalia, it is your responsibility to face William Ruto head-on, umwambie atuambie kifo cha Cyrus Jirongo.”
