Khalwale asks Wetang’ula to reveal talks with Jirongo before his death
Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale has challenged National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula to publicly explain what he discussed with the late Cyrus Jirongo in the days leading to the former Lugari MP’s death.
Khalwale spoke during Jirongo’s burial in Lumakanda on Tuesday, December 30, 2025, as pressure mounted on senior government figures to address unanswered questions surrounding the fatal road crash along the Nakuru–Naivasha highway.
Addressing former Vihiga senator George Khaniri, Khalwale said the burial provided the right forum to speak openly. He then turned his focus to Wetang’ula, calling on him to explain his meetings with Jirongo.
“Ningependa wewe George umesema mlikuwa wewe na mheshimiwa Wetang’ula. Hii ndio nafasi,” Khalwale said. “Nataka ndugu yangu Mheshimiwa Wetang’ula, utuambie Waluhya, mlipokuwa na Jirongo, mlisema nini, mlikuwa mnapanga nini.”
Khalwale went further and said that, while serving as Senate Majority Whip, he regularly worked late at Parliament Buildings and personally observed Jirongo making frequent visits to Speaker Moses Wetang’ula’s office in the weeks before his death.
“And Mheshimiwa Wetang’ula let me tell you,” Khalwale said. “Kabla President Ruto aniwachishe kazi, ofisi yako iko on first floor kwa Bunge, yangu iko first floor. Wewe unapoingia Bunge before six, the whole of last month, nimekuwa kwa ofisi yangu.”
“Hapo chini wewe ukiingia, shortly after, nilikuwa nikiona vilevile Jirongo anakuja kwa ofisi yako mnakaa hapo half an hour, 45 minutes, one hour,” he added. “Tell us what business you were discussing with Cyrus Jirongo.”

Khalwale said the questions were necessary because motive mattered in understanding how Jirongo died.
“Masengeli, there is something in crime called motive,” he said. “Jirongo either died because of politics, or because of business.”
Leaders demand clear answers
His remarks came as several leaders questioned the official account of Jirongo’s death. Earlier at the same burial, George Khaniri said private investigators had analysed CCTV footage from a petrol station in Naivasha and concluded that Jirongo was not alone in his car shortly before the crash.

“Sasa, juzi, mimi nimeangalia, kuna private investigators wamekuwa wakichunguza hii maneno,” Khaniri said. He claimed footage showed a passenger seated in the front seat when Jirongo stopped at the petrol station. Khaniri questioned why Jirongo was later found alone in the wreckage and demanded a full forensic investigation.
Saboti MP Caleb Amisi also accused the government of silence and demanded political accountability. He told Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi to confront President William Ruto and demand answers over Jirongo’s death.
“Mimi nawaomba wale wako kwa serikali. Mnajua mimi siko huko,” Amisi said. “Musalia, it is your responsibility to face William Ruto head-on, umwambie atuambie kifo cha Cyrus Jirongo.”
Concerns about the crash had earlier been raised by former Westlands MP Fred Gumo, who questioned why no passenger from a bus involved in the accident had come forward to explain what happened.
