Wetang’ula forwards Ruto’s nominees for Registrar of Political Parties to Justice and Legal Affairs Committee
By Cy Muganda, August 19, 2025National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has formally conveyed to the House a message from President William Ruto regarding the nomination of candidates to lead the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties.
In a communication made on the floor on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, Wetang’ula told Members of Parliament that Ruto had nominated John Cox Lorionokou as Registrar and Agatha Wanjiku Wahome as Assistant Registrar of Political Parties.
“Honourable Members, pursuant to the provisions of Standing Order 42(1), I wish to report to the House that I have received a Message from His Excellency the President regarding the nomination of persons for appointment as Registrar and Assistant Registrar of Political Parties,” the Speaker said.
The nominations, he added, were made under Section 34A and the Sixth Schedule to the Political Parties Act, read together with the Public Appointments (Parliamentary Approval) Act.
JLAC committee
Following the tabling of the message, Wetang’ula directed that the names, alongside the curriculum vitae and testimonials of the nominees, be referred to the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee (JLAC) for consideration in line with Standing Order 45.
“Honourable Members, Standing Order 45 provides that, upon receipt of notification of a nomination for appointment, such nomination shall stand committed to the relevant Departmental Committee. In this regard, I hereby refer the Message from His Excellency the President, together with the curriculum vitae and testimonials of the nominees, to the Committee for consideration,” Wetang’ula stated.

JLAC is now expected to conduct approval hearings before tabling its report in the House for debate and adoption.
Shortlisted candidates
The two were among twenty shortlisted candidates for the Registrar and Deputy Registrar positions by the Public Service Commission.
In the notice to the public on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, the Public Service Commission (PSC) shortlisted Ali Abdullahi Surraw, Sophia Kaindi Sitati Muchangi, Geoffrey Obonyo (PWD), Everlyne Cherotich Koiyan, Aloyce Peter Ndege, Mercy Kalondu Wambua, OGW, Manana W. E. Rodgers, Rahma Adan Jillo, Lorionokou John Cox, and Florence Tabu Birya for the Registrar positions.
Among those shortlisted for the Deputy Registrar positions were Seth Odhiambo Onyango, Josphine Kirion Eregae, Simon Owawa Nyamolo (PWD), Chebett Koske, Julius Cheche, Peter Mutui, Agatha Wanjiku Wahome, Mohamed Abdullahi Abdi, Robert Psakit Borter, and Gilbert Wiliam Opanga.
