Wetang’ula meets varsity head to discuss loss of bursary funds through theft
National Assembly speaker Moses Wetang’ula on Wednesday, September 18, 2024, met a team from Daystar University to discuss the bursary funds that are lost through theft.
Wetang’ula through his official X account stated that up to 60 per cent of varsity bursary funds are lost through theft.
Wetang’ula on state of education
The former Bungoma county senator said his meeting with the Daystar University team led by Vice Chancellor Prof Laban Ayiro, aimed to discuss the state of education in Kenya.
According to Wetang’ula, the country can comfortably support the students by consolidating the resources that are lost through theft.
He further noted that he had challenged the team to develop a policy that effectively tackles the problem.
“This morning, I met with a team from Daystar University, led by Vice Chancellor Prof. Laban Ayiro, to discuss the state of education in Kenya. One key issue we addressed is the loss of up to 60% of bursary funds through theft. By consolidating these resources, we could better support students. I challenged the team to develop a policy that effectively tackles this problem,” Wetang’ula stated.
Wetang’ula on communication
Moreover, Wetang’ula says the power of communication had also been discussed in their meeting.
Through lack of proper communication, Wetang’ula says many positive stories about the country go untold.
He further urged Prof Ayiro to have institutions lead the way in addressing Kenya’s most pressing issues, and irreducible minimums, for real progress.
Wetang’ula went ahead to urge universities to help curb the issue of fake academic papers in the country.
“We also discussed the power of communication. Kenya has many positive stories, but they often go untold. I believe we need to shift the narrative and highlight the good in our country, particularly our tourist sites and hidden treasures.
“Universities play a critical role in transforming the nation. I urged Prof. Ayiro to have institutions like Daystar lead the way in addressing Kenya’s most pressing issues, and irreducible minimums, for real progress. Universities need to also curb fake Academic papers that atenuate our Education sector,” Wetang’ula said.
