Police in Migori arrest armed man masquerading as KDF officer
A football match at Sony Green Stadium in Awendo, Migori County, was briefly disrupted after security officers arrested a man found in illegal possession of a firearm while attempting to access the VIP section on Sunday, June 7, 2026
According to a statement by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on their X handle on Monday, June 8, 2026, the person of interest was detained at a National Super League match between Migori Youth FC and Equity Bank FC. As the match was in progress, the man tried to gain access to the VIP dais, triggering a security alert from security that was deployed at the venue.
”Law enforcement officers in Migori have arrested a man found in illegal possession of a CZ pistol during a football showdown between Migori Youth FC and Equity Bank FC at Sony Green Stadium in Awendo,” the DCI statement read in part.

The DCI has further noted that police officers immediately attempted to subdue him, but it quickly descended into an escalating scene as the individual drew the CZ pistol, which had ten shots of ammunition in it. Security officers quickly rushed to his aid, subdued him and calmed the crowd before panic set in among the fans and officials.
The DCI has revealed that the person of interest was posing as a member of the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), which raised more concerns about his motive at the high-profile sporting event.
‘He was found in possession of a CZ pistol loaded with ten rounds of ammunition, all while masquerading as a member of the Kenya Defence Forces,” the statement added.
“Preliminary investigations revealed that the firearm belonged to one Peter Jobando, a civilian firearm holder who was quick to show up at the scene.”
Licensed gun owner arrested
Later, police determined that the gun belonged to another identified licensed civilian gun owner who was reportedly on the scene shortly after the arrest and said he had given the gun to the person of interest.
His admission resulted in his immediate arrest for allegedly having an unauthorised firearm, which is an offence under Kenya’s firearms laws.

Police arrested both individuals and are now in custody while the investigations continue. The gun and ammunition have been preserved as evidence, and the two are waiting to be arraigned in court when the investigation is finished.
The DCI has commended the “vigilance and prompt response” of the security staff, which helped avert “a potentially dangerous situation.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) is appealing for the public to keep reporting any suspicious activities via its anonymous reporting system while it continues to investigate the incident.
