National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has revealed some of the issues the Members of Parliament (MPs) will give priority to when they resume house business on Tuesday, September 17, 2024, after recess.

Reconstitution of IEBC

Wetang’ula, who on Sunday, September 15, 2024, attended church service at Chebukwa Catholic Church in Bungoma County, said reconstitution of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) will be one of the issues that will be given priority.

In a statement shared through his official X account shortly after the church service, Wetang’ula stated that the reconstitution of the IEBC is a matter crucial for the country’s progress.

According to the former Bungoma County senator, the country cannot afford further delays on boundary reviews or pending by-elections in several wards and constituencies.

Wetang’ula went ahead to urge people obstructing the process to reconsider their stance and allow the country to move forward.

“This morning, I joined the faithful at Chebukwa Catholic Church in Bungoma County for a solemn Sunday service, led by Father Protus Michael Osyanju. His words echoed the need for perseverance, faith, and action in creating meaningful change, a message that deeply resonated as we prepare for Parliament’s resumption on Tuesday, after recess. One of our priorities after the resumption will be the reconstitution of the IEBC, a matter crucial for the country’s progress.

“We cannot afford further delays on boundary reviews or pending by-elections in our wards and constituencies. I urge those obstructing this process to reconsider their stance and allow the country to move forward,” Wetang’ula stated.

He further appealed to Chief Justice Martha Koome to help finalise all court cases related to the reconstitution of the IEBC.

“Equally, I appeal to the Chief Justice to expedite the court cases related to this issue,” Wetang’ula wrote on X.

Wetang’ula on free education

Moreover, Wetang’ula stated that the National Assembly will also focus on consolidating public educational resources to potentially offer free education from primary through university.

“Parliament will also focus on consolidating public educational resources to potentially offer free education from primary through university. Such reforms will be instrumental in shaping Kenya’s future. I was accompanied by several MCAs led by the leader of the majority in Bungoma County Assembly, Hon. Juma Nyongesa, among other leaders,” he said.

The MPs went on recess after a motion was tabled by Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah, seeking to alter its calendar for the second session as adopted in April this year.

Ichung’wah wanted the parliamentarians to proceed on a month-long holiday from August 25 to September 25.

“That, pursuant to the provisions of Standing Order 28(4), this House resolves to alter its calendar for the regular sessions, as adopted on Wednesday, 15th February 2023, by varying the period for the long recess with respect to the second part of the session,” the order paper read.
