West Alego residents urge Orengo to operationalise idle Gunda Nina dispensary
Residents of West Alego have asked Siaya Governor James Orengo and the management of the Health department to work on modalities that would operationalise Gunda Nina dispensary to enable locals, especially the elderly, to seek healthcare closer home.
Speaking during the medical camp at Gunda Nina dispensary on Thursday, January 30, 2026, Bishop Wilfridah Okello said the large number of patients attending the camp clearly shows that the dispensary needs to be operational.

“It’s so unfortunate that once the free camp supports patients today and other days, it shall benefit other parts of West Alego, so for healthcare services to continue, the government needs to deploy staff, equipment and drugs,” Okello added.
Okello added that for the dispensary to be established, they pushed for it through the budget.
“We had proposed the establishment of Gunda Nina Dispensary and factored in the budget funds for it. We are worried because it’s been idle for years, and the coming of the medical camp has revived it, so it should thrive on healthcare services,” he added.
Bishop Sylus Owiti Oduor, the idea of establishing Gunda Nina dispensary has not been actualised. Despite taxes spent on the establishment of the building, it’s been idle, and the surging number of patients recorded during the medical camp held on Thursday, January 29, 2026, has justified the need to operationalise.
“The demand for healthcare services down here is too high, and that has been manifested by the high number of people who have flocked to the dispensary for the free medical camp organised by Christ Glory Centre Ministry and the Department of Health,” Sylus Owiti stated.
He added that Gunda Nina has modern facilities that have been neglected, including unmainatined compund.

“We have a modern facility at Gunda Nina, but it was abandoned. For us to hold a medical camp, I had to hire youths to clear the bushes, open the gate and clean the facility. Now that the County government is hiring nurses, we appeal to Governor James Orengo to operationalise Gunda Nina,” he added.
Bishop Oduor said that the elderly will have easy access to healthcare facilities at the doorstep.
At times, the elderly lack money to hire the services of a bodaboda to take them to Hawinga health facility, which is several kilometres from Misory, hence succumbing to malaria.
Oduor, at the same time, said that the medical camp has attracted 10 doctors from America and Canada.
The medical teams are led by David Lorston(surgeon) and daughter Mary, who is a physician, together with Ronald.
“We have also restocked our 6 facilities in West Alego with anti-snake venom to curb rising snake bites. The facilities have benefited from anti-rabies to respond to victims of dog bites,” Bishop Oduor said.
“We are doing so to complement government efforts to deliver healthcare services to the Siaya people,” he added.
Apart from the Gunda Nina dispensary, hundreds of patients flocked Hawinga health centre for similar services.
The medical camp seeks to screen cervical cancer, TB and its treatment, Ultrasound, Eye services, X-rays, among other ailments.

According to Nurse Edwin Omollo, any ailments that we won’t manage shall be referred to the Siaya referral hospital.
Siaya County Project Coordinator George Nyawaya said some of the non-operational dispensaries will be prioritised for equipping, and health staff will be deployed to operate.
“Those to be prioritised shall be of high impact. We rely on SHA to run our facilities; that’s why we shall opt for areas with huge demands.” Nyawaya stated.
Oduor, who is eying West Alego MCA in 2027, noted that their people have not fully benefited from devolution.
“Resources meant to benefit our people through projects are not forthcoming. Only a quarter of the Planned projects end up being implemented, and that makes us wonder where the resources go,” he said.
“Siaya receives money every quarter, and we expect to see devolution makinga positive impact on our lives, and that is not the case; that’s why I have declared interest on MCA seat in 2027 to push for things that would benefit our people,” he concluded.
