Githunguri Member of Parliament Gathoni Wamuchomba has welcomed the rare Blood Moon that lit up Kenya’s skies on Sunday night, September 7, 2025, describing it as a sign of new beginnings for her community and the country at large.

Wamuchomba, who has been vocal about cultural heritage and community values, drew from local traditions to interpret the celestial event.

In a Facebook post on September 7, she shared, “It’s a sign of a NEW beginning, in my hoods it’s called Mweri wa Kimakia Thinwa kana huria.” Her statement reflects Kikuyu beliefs that associate lunar events with renewal and transformation.

The post resonated with residents all over, many of whom shared images and personal reflections as they watched the red moon rise. For them, it was not only an astronomical occurrence but also a cultural moment that connected science with shared beliefs.

A celestial wonder across Kenya

Kenyans witnessed a total lunar eclipse that turned the moon a striking shade of red. The Kenya Space Agency (KSA) reported that the eclipse began shortly after moonrise at 6:40 pm, reached its deepest red at 8:30 pm, and culminated in the greatest eclipse at 9:11 pm before fading close to midnight. The event lasted over five hours and was visible across East Africa.

The red glow occurs when Earth passes directly between the Sun and Moon, blocking sunlight. Only longer red and orange wavelengths filter through the atmosphere, a process known as Rayleigh scattering, giving the moon its coppery colour. Unlike solar eclipses, the Blood Moon was safe to watch with the naked eye, allowing Kenyans to enjoy the spectacle in their neighbourhoods.

Adding to the wonder, Saturn appeared close to the moon on the same night, a sight confirmed by the Kenya Wildlife Service. The alignment created a dazzling display that sparked excitement among stargazers and photographers.

A time to reflect

The MP’s remarks came as she continues to champion youth empowerment and equitable development in her constituency. She has also pushed for amendments to the NG-CDF Act to strengthen resources at the grassroots, aligning her message of renewal with ongoing efforts for social change.

As the red glow faded and the moon returned to its usual brightness, Kenyans were left with memories of a night when science, culture, and symbolism converged. For many, the Blood Moon became more than just a spectacle; it was a reminder of the potential for fresh beginnings.
