Former Nyeri Town Member of Parliament Wambugu Ngunjiri has come out to oppose the idea of arresting former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua immediately he touches down in Kenya

Ngunjiri, who was once a close ally of Gachagua but has since become a vocal critic, made his position clear in a statement released on Sunday, August 10, 2025, on his social media pages.

He argued that when Gachagua announces his return date, he should be allowed to enter the country without being arrested at the airport.

According to Ngunjiri, Kenyans should be given the chance to welcome Gachagua jubilantly upon arrival before any legal actions are taken. He suggested that any arrest or prosecution should occur at a later stage, allowing space for a peaceful and celebratory reception.

“BTW, when Gachagua finally announces when he will come back, he should not be arrested at the airport. Kenyans should be allowed to welcome him ‘jubilantly’ there; then he can be arrested later.” Wambugu stated.

Calls for action on Gachagua

This follows Gachagua’s claims made in the United States, linking President William Ruto to Al-Shabaab and Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces.

On August 9, 2025, during an empowerment event in Keiyo South, Elgeyo Marakwet, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki demanded that Gachagua record a statement with investigative agencies upon his return to Kenya to substantiate his terrorism claims.

Kindiki labelled Gachagua a “reckless traitor”, emphasising that such claims threaten national security and urging authorities to hold him accountable to assist with investigations.

Similarly, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen insisted that Gachagua report to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) immediately upon landing to clarify his accusations. Murkomen criticised Gachagua for trivialising national security for political gain and damaging Kenya’s image.
