Verdict in Waluke’s Sh297m graft case set for October 6
The fate of Sirisia MP John Waluke will be known on October 6 when the High Court delivers its judgment.
Justice Esther Maina set the ruling date after the parties concluded their final submissions in the appeal application filed by the MP and co-convict Grace Wakhungu. “The court will deliver its judgement on October 6,” said the judge.
Waluke is challenging a lower court’s decision that sentenced him to a 67-year imprisonment term for his role in the Sh297 million maize graft, while his business associate, Grace Wakhungu, is challenging her 69-year imprisonment term.
Upon conviction, the trial court imposed an alternative of a combined fine of Sh2 billion. The two are out on bonds of Sh20 million and Sh30 million, respectively, pending the determination of the appeal.
In his final submissions, senior counsel Paul Muite asked the judge to quash the lower court’s decision.
Waluke and Wakhungu accused the DPP of putting pressure on anti-corruption magistrate Elizabeth Juma to send them to jail. They also accused the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission of paying a witness to secure the conviction.
