United Opposition pressures Ruto to provide answers in mysterious Cyrus Jirongo’s death

The United Opposition, led by the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) Deputy Party Leader Cleophas Malalah, have called upon President William Ruto to provide answers in the mysterious death of former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo.

Speaking on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, Malalah, flanged by the United Opposition bigwigs in Nairobi shortly after condoling with Jirongo’s family at his Gigiri home, asked Ruto to order thorough investigations into the demise of Jirongo that occurred on Saturday, December 13, 2025, along Nakuru-Nairobi Highway involving his Mercedes-Benz car and a Climax bus heading to Western Kenya.

In his argument, Malalah said the Directorate of Criminal Investigations’ report on the matter is inconsistent, calling upon investigators to provide names of the passengers on board the Climax bus at the time of the accident.

Preliminary findings indicate that Jirongo’s vehicle, registration number KCZ 305U, was involved in a head-on collision with a public service vehicle bus, registration number KCU 576A, operated by Climax Company Ltd.

Seeking answers

”We need answers. We are surprised that after over 72 hours, we have still not been given the identity of the passengers on board the Climax bus. We cannot have 65 luhyas getting involved in an accident heading home, and their brother is killed…yet no single name has been revealed. We want to be told the whereabouts of the occupants of the particular bus,” Malalah argued.

Cleophas Malalah added that the state must provide clarification before the former MP is laid to rest. ”A bus heading to Busia carries Luhyas; we cannot lose a Luhya, and only one person comes out to bear witness. As a community, we urge President William Ruto to the DCI that we want those answers. We do not need sideshows. We need clarification before we lay Cyrus Jirongo to rest.

DCI’s inconsistencies

Malalah’s call comes shortly after the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has confirmed it is continuing a detailed probe into the circumstances that led to the death of Cyrus Jirongo, issuing a correction after an earlier communications error misstated the vehicle’s registration number.

In a brief public notice shared via X on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, investigators said the registration of the car involved in the crash is KCZ 350C, not KCZ 305U as was previously reported. The DCI expressed regret for the typo and any confusion it caused, adding they remain focused on piecing together what happened on the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway on the night of Saturday, December 13, 2025.
