Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has mourned Maina Wanjigi in a compelling tribute during his funeral held in Nyeri on Saturday, July 6, 2024.

The memorable tribute read on his behalf by his brother Muhoho Kenyatta, detailed Wanjigi as a remarkable leader and patriot whose dedication to the development of the country has left an indelible mark on society.

The former Head of State also acknowledged Wanjigi’s unwavering commitment to the people of Kamukunji as well as his visionary leadership which has played a significant role in the foundation of the Gikomba Market in Nairobi, which has spurred the country’s economy through trade.

“It is with deep sorrow and profound sadness that I have received the news of the passing of our esteemed elder statesman, the former cabinet minister James Maina Wanjigi. James Wanjigi was not only a remarkable leader but also a true patriot whose dedication to the development of our nation has left an indelible mark on our society,

“His unwavering commitment to the people of Kamukunji and his visionary leadership were instrumental in founding and development of the iconic Gikomba Market in Nairobi which continues to serve as a bustling hub for traders and shoppers alike,” the tribute read my Muhoho states.

At the same time, Uhuru acknowledged that as the father of Kamukunji settlers, Wanjigi’s efforts have created employment opportunities for several Kenyans who continue to enjoy the opportunities for a better life.

“As the father of Kamukunji settlers, his efforts have provided countless families with opportunities for a better life. Wanjigi’s future is further enshrined in the establishment of the renowned Jua Kali industry in Shauri Moyo, which provided countless artisans and small-scale entrepreneurs with livelihoods and contributed significantly to the growth of the informal sector and the overall economy,” he said.

“As a dedicated public servant, honourable Wanjigi served as a Member of Parliament for Kamukunji for over 25 years succeeding the late Tom Mboya in 1969, his tenure was marked by steadfast commitment to the welfare of his constituents and to the development of Kamukunji. His exemplary service set a high standard for leadership and community engagement.”

The former president further extended his heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased and his friends, wishing him eternal peace as his soul rests.

“As we mourn the loss of this great son of Kenya, we celebrate his remarkable life and the contributions he made to our country. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations and strive for the betterment of our society, on behalf of the family and indeed on my own behalf, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the family of the late James Maina Wanjigi, his friends, and the people of Kamukunji. May the almighty God grant you strength and solace during this difficult time, may his soul rest in eternal peace, farewell James Maina Wanjigi, you will forever remain in our hearts and memories as a symbol of dedication and service to our beloved nation.”
