Two people were yesterday charged with obtaining Sh1.6 million by falsely pretending a tender to supply Lankhost Tug ropes at the United Nations was genuine.

Leileen Babra alias Kethline and Sydney Kiptoo Koech appeared before Milimani Chief Magistrate Martha Mutuku and denied the charges.

According to the charge sheet, the two on January 21, jointly with others not before court they obtained Sh800,000 from Zuberi Khali Mutie by falsely pretending that a tender No.UNOPS/KOEH/ITB/01/2020 dated May 4,2020 and UNOPS purchase order were genuine documents from the United Nations office for project services (UONPS) to supply Lankhost Tag rope, a fact they knew was false.

With others not before court

The Court heard that on January 19 this year at Shell Petrol Station Langata road in Nairobi, Barbara and Kiptoo jointly with others not before court obtained from Zuberi Sh1,750,000 pretending they were in a position to supply the same Lankhost Tag rope.

Their defence lawyers asked the court to give them reasonable cash bail arguing that the accused persons were arrested on Sunday evening and have been in custody until yesterday.

The court heard that Leileen was a mother of two children who were left stranded at the roadside after the arrest.

“She does not even know who took the kids who are under five years. She is not flight risk the Investigating officer has visited their various homes, and I would not have any trouble to avail them,” the lawyer told the court.

The lawyer further claimed that the lady doesn’t have any work that can assist her in paying bail as she depends on wellwishers.

Released on bond

Mutuku released them on a bond of Sh1 million or alternative cash bail of Sh500,000. The criminal case will be mentioned on February 10 for further directions.
