Police have arrested two individuals and seized over 130 litres of chang’aa following a crackdown on illicit brews in Kwambira, Limuru Sub-County.

In a press statement shared on its X account on August 6, 2025, the National Police Service (NPS) said the operation was carried out by officers from the Kiambu County Headquarters on August 5, 2025.

“Police officers from Kiambu County Headquarters conducted a crackdown on illicit brews in Kwambira, Limuru Sub-County, on 5 August 2025, arresting two suspects,” the NPS stated.

According to the police, the chang’aa was found at the residence of one of the arrested individuals, where it had been carefully packaged and stored for distribution.

“During the operation, 135 litres of chang’aa—packed in one-litre polythene sachets and stored in sacks—were seized from one of the individual’s residence,” the statement read.

“The second individual was caught selling the illicit brew to the public,” the statement added.

The NPS also confirmed that the two were taken into custody and are expected to be arraigned, with the seized alcohol being held as evidence.

“Both individuals were booked in custody awaiting arraignment, while the confiscated chang’aa was secured as evidence,” NPS wrote.

Similar operation

The crackdown in Kiambu follows an earlier operation in Nyamira County, where police recovered 260 kilograms of a substance suspected to be cannabis after a raid along the Kisii-Sotik road.

According to a statement issued by the NPS on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, the vehicle involved was fitted with a fake number plate, seemingly to avoid detection.

“The recovery was made yesterday when officers intercepted a suspicious vehicle travelling from Kisii towards Sotik. Upon further investigation, it was discovered that the vehicle was fitted with a fake number plate in an attempt to evade detection,” NPS stated.

Following this discovery, the two occupants of the vehicle were immediately arrested and taken into police custody.

“Two occupants of the vehicle were arrested and are currently in police custody, pending arraignment. The vehicle has also been impounded as investigations continue,” NPS added.
