Tourism CS challenges governors on conservation

Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano has urged governors to help the government reclaim the wildlife corridors and dispersal areas through the implementation of the wildlife migratory corridors. This, the CS noted, cannot be achieved without the intervention of governors since counties are a critical partner.
Miano explained that the tourism sector is, inherently, a county-driven sector, with diverse tourism products ranging from wildlife safaris to cultural heritage, coastal experiences, adventure tourism, and ecotourism. These all happen within our counties.
The tourism CS spoke during a meeting with the Council of Governors (CoG) Tourism and Wildlife Committee, where she insisted that by fostering stronger partnerships, the country will be able to achieve the ambitious targets of recording 5 million tourists by 2027 and boosting tourism earnings to Sh560 billion.
“Your role in developing and enhancing these offerings is vital in strengthening Kenya’s position as a leading global destination,” she told the committee.
Miano said the government was also committed to working hand-in-hand
with county governments to implement policies and initiatives that promote conservation and tourism growth.
“Let us strengthen our commitment to advancing Kenya’s tourism
and wildlife conservation agenda through a shared vision, strategic
planning and actionable partnerships,” she said.
Other areas which Miano said the government was going to work with counties included amplifying wildlife education and awareness, establishing a tourism and wildlife intergovernmental forum and aligning policy and legislation with devolution.
