Tokyo Mafias: Police corner gang members in Nairobi’s Makadara estate raid
Officers from South B Police Station conducted a targeted security operation on April 11, 2026, dismantling a criminal group identified as the “Tokyo Mafias” operating within Makadara, Nairobi.
The operation focused on suspected criminal hideouts in Fuata Nyayo and Shimo La Tewa areas. According to the National Police Service (NPS) statement on Sunday, April 12, 2026, the raid was intelligence-led and supported by information from members of the public.
Ten persons of interest were cornered during the operation and taken into custody at South B Police Station pending processing and arraignment in court.
“Officers from South B Police Station yesterday, 11th April 2026, successfully conducted a well-coordinated crackdown on a notorious criminal group known as the ‘Tokyo Mafias’,” NPS statement read in part.
Police said the crackdown is part of ongoing efforts to address organised criminal activity in residential areas, particularly incidents involving burglary and armed robbery.
Recovered weapons and suspected stolen property
During the operation, officers recovered an imitation firearm and several weapons, including pangas and swords.
Police also seized two television sets along with house-breaking implements believed to have been used in previous burglaries.

Authorities stated that the recovered items are being processed as exhibits while investigations continue to establish ownership and possible links to reported theft cases within Makadara and surrounding neighbourhoods.
The National Police Service noted that the presence of weapons and burglary tools indicates coordinated targeting of households in the area. Investigators are working to determine whether the suspects are connected to other reported incidents of theft.
Public intelligence and coordinated policing
The police credited members of the public for providing critical intelligence that contributed to the success of the operation. Officers emphasised that community cooperation remains central to identifying and dismantling criminal networks.
According to the statement, the operation reflects intensified policing efforts in Nairobi aimed at improving safety in densely populated estates through targeted raids and intelligence-led enforcement.
Authorities urged residents to continue reporting suspicious activities and working closely with security agencies to strengthen neighbourhood safety. They also confirmed that follow-up operations are ongoing to prevent regrouping of criminal elements.
All ten persons of interest remain in custody as investigations proceed ahead of their court appearance.
The National Police Service reaffirmed its commitment to sustained operations aimed at reducing crime and restoring order in affected areas.
