Teso South Member of Parliament (MP) Mary Emase has proposed making amendments to the law governing the right to picket and demonstrate in the country.

Speaking in Shinyalu, Kakamega County, on Saturday, June 21, 2025, the MP stated that restricting the demonstrations to a specific place would preserve public safety and order.

The MP decried the cases of wanton destruction of properties witnessed during the protest in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) following the death of blogger Albert Ojwang.

Regulate Demos

“We need to bring a new law and an amendment to designate places for holding demonstrations. The law should stipulate that we have a specific law for holding demonstrations. We cannot have people roaming without an agenda and destroying people’s properties in the name of demos,” she asserted.

The MP who serves as the Western Caucus MPs’ vice chairman served a warning to those keen to destabilise the government through mass action.

“For those trying to drag this country down, we are telling them you will fail miserably. We are fully behind Ruto, and the government is steadfast, and we are confident we will walk together,” she stated.

Emase’s sentiments follow hot on the heels of House Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, who also voiced concern with the conduct of demonstrators in the country.

Speaking on Friday, June 20, 2025, Wetang’ula, in a passionate address to the youth, challenged them to embrace civility while expressing their frustrations, urging them to focus on the good of the country.

The speaker urged the youth to shun being drawn into conflicts that do not concern them.

“Don’t be drawn into conflicts that are not yours and hate people you don’t even know. Don’t hate people who have not even wronged you; focus on our country,” he stated.

Destructions

Speaking on the mayhem witnessed in Nairobi following the demonstrations against the killings of Albert Ojwang, Wetang’ula observed that the tendency to indiscriminately vent out anger has destroyed people’s livelihoods.

“Those bringing chaos and destroying other property, as has happened in Nairobi, we condemn them. People struggle to build lives only to lose them when skirmishes arise, and the youths come and take away their property. You end up crippling someone who has struggled so much to be where he is,” he said.
