Five men and five women lost their lives on the spot yesterday morning after a public service vehicle they were travelling in was involved in a road accident with a lorry at Soy area on Eldoret-Kitale highway.

Uasin Gishu County Police Commander Benjamin Mwanthi said among those who perished in the accident include the matatu driver.

While speaking to the media in his Eldoret office, Mwanthi said the trailer is said to have rammed into the 14-seater matatu that belongs to the Great Rift Shuttle.

Three children miraculously survived the fatal accident with serious injuries and were rushed to the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret for medical attention.

Members of the public had earlier on helped in removing the three victims who had been trapped in the wreckage in an operation that was launched by the police officers.

According to Mwanthi, the ill-fated matatu was heading to Eldoret town while the trailer, which was at high speed, was enroute to Kitale town.

A police report later indicated that the accident involved vehicles Reg. No. KBZ 135X Isuzu Frr driven by an unknown driver and Reg. No. KCH 468D Toyota Hiace Great Rift Shuttle Driven by Stephen Tibi.

As a result, the driver of the matatu and 8 unknown passengers were fatally injured on the spot, while 1 passenger was pronounced dead on arrival at MTRH.”

“The driver of the trailer managed to escape in the confusion and police have launched a manhunt for his arrest. We urge the driver to report immediately to the nearest police station for further legal action,” stated the report,” the police report stated.
