Sudi defends splashing of millions on empowerment drives amid scrutiny

Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi has defended the empowerment drives being spearheaded by various leaders in the country, noting that it is the only way to uplift citizens from poverty.
Speaking during an empowerment drive in Mwala Constituency, where Deputy President Kithure Kindiki was presiding over the empowerment of women and youth, Sudi urged Kindiki to focus on major infrastructural projects.
“Let Kindiki and William Ruto handle major infrastructure projects like roads and housing. But when it comes to these smaller, grassroots initiatives, they should leave them to us,” Sudi said.
“Once the markets have been commissioned, vegetable traders should get Ksh10,000 each to uplift their livelihoods.
Defends empowerment
“We shall contribute from our salaries as elected leaders and from our businesses to ensure that all women are empowered. Is there a problem with doing such?”
While defending the initiatives, Sudi said the disgruntled members of the opposition were against uplifting the lives of ordinary citizens.
“The other person who served for half of a term has neither supported needy students with school fees nor supported bodaboda riders; all he does is to criticise the government from morning to evening,” Sudi said.

During their Voi tour on June 7, 2025, opposition leaders questioned the source of funds for the empowerment drives spearheaded by Kindiki.
They also stated that the government had resorted to hoodwinking citizens with fundraisers after failing to deliver meaningful economic transformation in the country.
“Mambo haya yote ndio serikali ya Ruto imeshindwa na wanakuja kila mahali sasa wameanzisha mfumo mwingine wa harambee kupitia nyuma ati oo wanaiita women empowerment,” Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka said on June 7, 2025.
(All these fundraisers throughout the country in the name of women’s empowerment are an admission of the Ruto-led government that they have failed, and have invented a different approach.)
Ksh45M empowerment
On June 6, 2025, Sudi organised an empowerment drive that distributed two vehicles, 100 motorcycles, hundreds of sewing machines, and other assorted tools of trade worth Ksh45 million in Kapseret to locals.

“I have friends, especially from Tanzania,” Sudi said. “One of them is Rostum, a prominent businessman and a very close friend of mine. I also have another friend named Abdul. The two of them, I, and three other people came together and contributed. There were four of us. I won’t disclose the exact amounts they gave me, but I can assure you that the Ksh45 million used for these items did not come from government coffers,” Sudi said.
The event, which was attended by various leaders also fundraised Ksh100 million towards empowerment initiatives in the constituency.
