Calls by the Opposition for demonstrations and collection of signatures meant to push President William Ruto’s government out of office will only make the economic situation worse, Ruiru MP Simon King’ara has warned.

The legislator asked Kenyans to ignore the push by Azimio la Umoja – One Kenya Alliance saying should there be a fresh election, the cost of the exercise will be shouldered by taxpayers.

Noting that the Kenya Kwanza administration’s first budget was passed less than a month ago, he told wananchi to exercise patience and restraint and give President Ruto time to fix the economy.

“The prevailing economic downturn is a worldwide phenomenon and some global companies including Barclays Bank in the UK have felt the heat, leading to closure of some of their branches. The situation is the same in other countries like South Africa,” said the lawmaker.

King’ara was speaking during a burial service for Lucy Wangari Njuguna, the mother of Garissa Catholic Bishop George Muthaka at Mutonya village in Gatong’ora ward of his constituency.

“I know there are frustrations over the economic hardships and things are tough, but the solution is not going to the streets or attempting to remove the government through collection of signatures. In fact should there be another election soon, it is Kenyans who will fund the exercise,” King’ara stated.
He said with the harvest season approaching after the end of the rainy season, the prices of most consumables are likely to go down. “We should not despair or lose hope.”
