Former Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary General Wilson Sossion has officially announced that he wants to take back the union’s top job. Sossion, who served as KNUT’s leader for over a decade, stated that his decision is driven by a deep commitment to the welfare of teachers across the country.

Speaking during an interview with a local radio station on Tuesday, March 24, 2026, Sossion has said that the decision to vie for the seat again has been prompted by the challenges that the teachers are facing, saying that the current leadership has been unable to resolve the teachers’ plights, indicating his intentions to solve the issues once he is elected as the union’s secretary general.

“I am like Moses. I have heard the cries of my teachers in Egypt, and I will return,” Sossion declared, drawing a symbolic parallel to his return to lead the teachers’ union.

He added, “Collins Oyuu should prepare for a democratic process and accept that both his name and mine will be on the ballot.”

KNUT’s upcoming elections

Sossion’s announcement comes amid growing speculation about the upcoming elections and the potential challengers vying for the role.

Collins Oyuu, the current Secretary General of KNUT, is likely to defend his position. However, Sossion made it clear that he supports a clear and fair process that calls for his departure because he is too old to be a teacher.

Sossion, who is well-known for fighting for teachers’ rights and better education policies, said that his main goals will continue to be to address salary issues, make working conditions better, and make sure that teachers’ voices are heard in national education policy discussions.

As the campaign heats up, people expect a lively race that could change how KNUT leaders work together. Sossion is trying to use his experience and past successes to get members to support him before the vote.

Sossion succeeded by Oyuu

Wilson Sossion served as the secretary-general of the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) from December 2013 to June 2021. Elected as the sixth secretary-general, he led the union for nearly eight years before resigning in June 2021 to pursue political interests and was subsequently succeeded by Collins Oyuu.
