Sigh of relief as Globe Roundabout reopens to motorists after bridge repairs

By , March 25, 2026

Motorists using the Globe Roundabout along the Thika Superhighway (A2) can now resume normal travel after the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) restored traffic flow at the busy junction.

In a notice issued on Wednesday, March 25, KeNHA confirmed that the section had reopened following the completion of reinstatement works at the Nairobi River Bridge. The roundabout had been temporarily closed on March 12 to allow engineers to carry out critical repair works.

“The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) wishes to notify motorists and the public that traffic flow at Globe Roundabout along Thika Superhighway has been restored. Motorists can now resume normal travel along this section,” the notice read.

Alternate routes

The closure had disrupted movement between Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD), Kipande Road, and the Thika Superhighway, forcing commuters to use alternative routes. Vehicles heading to the CBD from Thika Road were diverted through the Globe Overpass, while traffic from University Way was redirected via Prof. Wangari Maathai Road.

Drivers using Kipande Road were advised to travel through Limuru Road before joining Prof. Wangari Maathai Road to reach the CBD.

KeNHA Director General Luka Kimeli said the repair works were necessary to improve the structural integrity of the Nairobi River Bridge and ensure safety for all road users.

“KeNHA appreciates the cooperation, patience, and understanding demonstrated by motorists and residents during this period,” he added.

The reopening is expected to ease congestion that built up during the closure, bringing relief to thousands of daily commuters who rely on this route. Globe Roundabout is a key junction connecting major roads leading to the CBD, Thika Superhighway, University Way, Kipande Road, Limuru Road, Kirinyaga Road, and the OTC area.

The junction handles heavy traffic daily and is critical for motorists travelling between Nairobi and satellite towns.

During the closure, public transport operators adjusted schedules and alternative routes, while commuters faced extended travel times, delays, and higher fares. Businesses in Nairobi’s city centre also felt the impact as goods and services were delayed.
