The whereabouts of more than five people remain unknown following the collapse of a bridge on Waiyaki Way in Nairobi’s Kangemi suburbs yesterday evening.

Eye witness who spoke to the People Daily said that only four people had been rescued with more than five , suspected to be trapped in the rabble by yesterday evening.

Njuguna Kimani, a boda boda operator at the busy intersection, said he witnessed  the collapse and rescue effort.

“It was a few minutes past 4 o’clock when I heard screams followed by a commotion, on checking I saw people running towards the bridge.

Traders at the market joined the construction workers in pulling out those who had been injured,” said Kimani.

They were rushed by Good Samaritans to medical facilities as the operation continued into the night.

Among those I saw being rescued were two men and a woman whom I suspect was a vegetable vendor at the roadside market” he added.

“We will know the full extent of the damage and casualties tomorrow morning. We will conduct a roll call. Most of those who have been affected by the collapse are buyers and traders who depend on the market for a livehood”, Kimani noted.

Traffic officers had a difficult time controlling the highway that was blocked for a better part of the evening.

The road linking Nairobi City to Mai Mahiu turn off started way back in 2017 and was expected to have been completed by December 2020.
