Murang’a County Senator Jue Nyutu has vehemently rejected allegations that the ongoing youth protests are orchestrated efforts aimed at toppling the government.

He described such assertions as unfounded, unrealistic, and politically motivated narratives designed to undermine legitimate expressions of dissent.

Speaking during an interview with a local TV station on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, Senator Nyutu dismissed the notion that protests, regardless of their scale or intensity, could by themselves facilitate a regime change.

He argued that any attempt to overthrow a government requires comprehensive control of critical state apparatuses, including the military and the media, elements far beyond the reach of ordinary demonstrators.

“This tendency to twist demonstrations into claims that protesting youths are agents of a coup is a tired and superficial argument. I hesitate to be impolite, but any leader propagating this narrative is merely echoing unverified hearsay,” the senator remarked.

He urged political commentators and leaders to adopt a more nuanced and realistic understanding of governance and political power dynamics. Senator Nyutu pointed out that while protests are a fundamental democratic right, they do not, in isolation, amount to the capacity to dismantle a government.

“To say that these protesting youths are organised by somebody to overthrow the government is a tired and very cheap argument. I think I wouldn’t want to be rude, but any leader saying this – I put it to them that they are saying it because they heard someone saying it. But we should be realistic.

“I mean, how do you get to overthrow the government? How does one expect to overthrow a government? The pathway to such a dramatic shift entails seizing control over the military and influential media outlets. Merely staging protests is not a shortcut to power, no matter how persistent those claims may be,” Nyutu insisted.

The senator further emphasised that equating youth protests with conspiracy-driven coups trivialises the legitimate frustrations and aspirations of the country’s young population. He warned against weaponising peaceful demonstrations as grounds for politically convenient accusations.

“You cannot claim that because young people are protesting, there is an orchestrated plan somewhere to overthrow the government. Such allegations are baseless and dismissive of the genuine issues prompting the protests,” Senator Nyutu asserted.
