Security agencies heighten operations in Kwale County
The Kenya National Police Service has taken proactive measures to enhance security across the country during the festive season by recalling all officers currently on leave.
Kwale County Police Commander Ali Nuno confirmed the move, stressing that the decision is part of a broader strategy to ensure the safety of citizens and visitors during Christmas and New Year celebrations.
Speaking to the media in Kwale Police Headquarters, Nuno assured residents and tourists in Kwale County that adequate security arrangements are in place to prevent criminal activities, such as theft, robbery, and other forms of disorder, which are often heightened during the festive season.
He noted that the heightened police presence would focus on key areas, including public transport hubs, markets, beaches, places of worship, and entertainment venues.
“Security is our top priority during this festive season. We want everyone to enjoy the holidays without fear,” he said. Nuno revealed that a multi-agency security team has been deployed to enhance coordination and surveillance efforts.
The team includes officers from the Kenya Wildlife Services, National Youth Service, Coast Guard, Kenya Prisons, and the Bomb Disposal Squad. Nuno said the collaborative approach seeks to ensure comprehensive coverage of security needs in Kwale and beyond.
To maximize efficiency, some officers will patrol in vehicles, while others will operate on foot in civilian clothes to blend in and monitor activities discreetly.
The county police boss said some of the officers would be patrolling on vehicles while others on feet in civilian clothes.
Patrols will also be intensified along major highways and border areas to curb incidents of smuggling and other transnational crimes.
He called upon members of the public to cooperate with law enforcement agencies by reporting any suspicious activities.
“Security is a shared responsibility. We need everyone to stay vigilant and utilize the toll- free police hotline and provide timely information to help us maintain law and order,” he said. Nuno reiterated the police service commitment to maintaining law and order while encouraging everyone to celebrate responsibly.
He further urged motorists and pedestrians to exercise caution and adhere to traffic regulations to minimize accidents, which tend to spike during this period due to increased travel and celebrations.
He attributed the spike in accidents to increased road congestion, over-speeding, distracted driving, and in some cases, driving under the influence.
