Eight police officers and two civilians were on Wednesday arrested in separate incidents for various offences including theft of Sh2.2 million and extortion.

One of the officers, said to be rogue, has been linked to previous criminal activities in Nairobi while two of them were involved in the tracking down and subsequent arrest of Ian Njoroge, the 19-year-old man who had assaulted a police officer in Kasarani on Sunday.

In one of the cases, four officers and two members of the public were arrested within Kasarani police station compound in connection with the theft of Sh2.2 million from a vehicle in Utawala on Monday afternoon.

A total of Sh473,000 believed to be part of the stolen amount was also recovered from the six, who were ambushed in the station’s official police vehicle parked within the station’s compound.

The suspects are believed to have trailed the accountant of Rophine International School from a bank in Utawala on Monday afternoon before breaking into his car and stealing the cash.

The officers have been identified as Sergeant Antony Ndegwa Anwal, Corporal Daniel Lekakeny Sunkuli, and Constable Simon Macharia Maina all of Kasarani Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

The other officer is Constable Antony Mwenda of Ruai Police station while the two other suspects are Lukas Magwaga and Young Wakise.

“The six were arrested at the Kasarani Police Station public parking yard by a combined team of sleuths from DCI Nairobi region and Kayole sub-county,” the DCI said.

According to the investigation report, the accountant had withdrawn the amount from the bank and was to be used in paying casual workers at the school.

He then parked his car outside the school, took some amount from the withdrawn sum, locked the car and entered the school compound.

“Allegedly, he could not carry the whole amount. Minutes later when he went back to pick more cash, he found the car broken into and the millions missing,” the DCI said.

The matter was reported at Mihango police station on Monday and investigations were launched.

It was later established that the suspects driving in a saloon car registration number KCR 959D had trailed him from the bank.

Detectives from Nairobi region and Kayole obtained crucial actionable intelligence and proceeded to Utawala to pursue the suspects who had been captured on CCTV.

Official duty

On arrival, the detectives learnt that the suspect had been picked moments earlier by unknown people driving in a Subaru Forester car.

“Further intelligence led the team to the Kasarani station, where the six were ambushed in a GK vehicle,” the DCI added.

The officers were forced to identify themselves in the presence of the Sub-County Police Commander, his deputy and the Sub-County Criminal Investigations Officer.

The DCI sub-county head confirmed that the arrested officers were neither on official duty in Utawala nor working under his instructions.

“Upon search, Sh350,000 was found in the car and another Sh123,000 retrieved from their pockets,” the DCI said.

Two other vehicles, one belonging to the Ruai-based officer and another belonging to the fifth suspect, Magwaga, were also found parked in the compound.

Another officer identified as Constable Francis Mutiso from Kibwezi police station was also arrested following an investigation into the theft of 522 bags, each weighing 25kg, of rice which were stolen on Wednesday morning.

Detectives launched investigations

The driver of the lorry, registration number KCY 107U was driving to Nairobi from Mombasa when he was accosted by six men who took control of the lorry within Thange area in Kibwezi, Makueni county. The men took control of the vehicle and dumped him at Ngwata area.

Following the investigations three suspects including Constable Mutiso who was in uniform and armed with a rifle, Juda Kipkoech Kandie and John Maingi.

“The lorry was recovered at Manyanga area near Kibwezi with a few bags of rice. Also recovered was a Toyota Probox registration number KDD 396T,” DCI Kibwezi said.
