Managements of secondary schools in Homa Bay county have been asked to consider installing CCTV cameras in a bid to improve security in the institutions.

County commissioner Moses Lilan said installing the gadgets would address security challenges in the schools amid rising cases of fires and arson attacks.

Lilan noted that the cameras have capacity to help monitor most of the activities going on in the schools especially within boarding facilities and can help in tackling cases of unrest in schools.

This comes amid the current wave of arson and unrest being experienced in boarding secondary schools across the country since the resumption of learning in Term two.

In the county, a dormitory was razed down at Gendia Boys High School in Rachuonyo North sub county on Monday last week.

Last term, a dormitory was razed at Ringa Boys secondary in Kabondo Kasipul constituency. Others are St Elizabeth K’Oyoo and God Manera where students and parents protested over alleged mismanagement.

Lilan argued such unruly behaviours do not only have impact on the affected schools but also have ramification on security of the community. He observed investigations take long and at times become difficult to point out those who committed the offence in the absence of the CCTV cameras.
