Salasya vows to halve cement and steel prices if elected president
Mumias East Member of Parliament Peter Salasya has pledged to slash the cost of construction materials by half if elected as Kenya’s sixth president in 2027.
In a post on X dated September 14, 2025, Salasya promised to address the high cost of cement and steel, which he said remain the most expensive components in construction and a barrier to affordable housing.
“As your 6th president I will ensure prices of cement and steel comes down by a half chuma imepanda bei sijui kama nini ningekuwa nimemaliza hii nyumba but Fabrication works of steel and cement remains the most expensive components in construction in Kenya,” Salasya wrote.
“I will make those affordable houses in quotes ama watu wa nyumba za affordable wananunua wapi hizo chuma na simiti so that we qualify to call those houses affordable am speaking as an economist, not as a botanist.”
The youthful legislator, who has hopes of winning the presidential seat in the next general elections, projects himself as a fun but visionary leader.
Push for affordable housing
Salasya’s remarks come against the backdrop of rising construction costs that have put home ownership out of reach for many Kenyans.
He argued that unless the prices of steel and cement are reduced, government initiatives under the Affordable Housing Programme risk being unattainable for ordinary citizens. His proposed intervention, he said, would make houses genuinely affordable while easing financial strain on households.

Emphasis on economic credentials
In a separate post on the same day, Salasya highlighted his academic background to bolster his economic arguments.
“Presidential Aspirants with qualifications: Peter Salasya – Bachelor of Commerce, William Ruto – Bachelor’s in animals Rigathi Gachagua – Bachelor’s in literature, Kalonzo Musyoka – Bachelor’s in law, Matiang’i – Bachelor’s in ICT, Maraga – Bachelor’s in law. From above, the only person who will understand the economy of Kenya and make it real is none other than Hon Peter Kalerwa Salasya. Vote Salasya for a better Kenya,” he wrote.
He maintained that his Bachelor’s degree in Commerce equips him with the tools to manage public debt, grow industries, stabilise inflation, and create sustainable youth employment.

Confidence in 2027 Bid
Salasya has repeatedly expressed confidence in his presidential ambitions. In July 2025, he declared on X, “Nitanyorosha hawa wote. All my mathematics are in place to outshine them politically. The wave is coming,” signaling a strategic approach to his campaign.
