Ruto explains delay in Vihiga stadium project as county hosts Labour Day in school compound
By Mustafa Juma, May 1, 2026President William Ruto has shed light on the delayed construction of the long-awaited Kidundu Stadium in Vihiga County, attributing the setback to land compensation challenges that have now been resolved.
Speaking during the 2026 Labour Day celebrations held at Chavakali Boys’ High School grounds, Ruto told attendees that the government had to first settle compensation claims for residents occupying land earmarked for the project before construction could proceed.
“Mimi pia nataka niwahakikishie yakwamba stadium yenu hapa Kidundu ilichelewa kidogo kwasababu tulikuwa na watu pale ilipaswa tuwalipe ndio waweze kutupatia ardhi zaidi,” Ruto said.
Compensation process concluded
Ruto, however, assured the public that the compensation process had been fully concluded, paving the way for construction to begin without further interruptions.
He framed the project as part of the government’s broader push to expand sports infrastructure and unlock economic opportunities at the county level.
According to the Head of State, the government has spent Ksh90 million to relocate the land occupants, paving the way for the construction of the modern stadium in the area.
“I want to now state that we have paid everybody who we needed to pay. We have spent Ksh90 million to relocate the people who were there so that we can build a modern stadium right here in Vihiga,” he said.

The President’s remarks come amid growing scrutiny over stalled infrastructure projects across the country, with critics questioning delays despite repeated government promises.
The choice of a school compound as the venue for national Labour Day celebrations also underscored the absence of a modern stadium in the county.
The planned stadium is expected to serve as a key facility for sports development, youth engagement, and hosting regional events, potentially boosting local businesses and tourism in Vihiga County.

Kidundu Stadium construction launch
Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi had earlier shared details about the construction and compensation of landowners affected by the construction process of the Kidundu Stadium in Vihiga County.
In a statement on Thursday, March 19, 2026, Mudavadi explained that the ten-thousand-seater stadium is set to transform Vihiga’s sporting landscape while unlocking new opportunities for youths.
“Kidundu Stadium is set to become a flagship project implemented by the Kenya Kwanza Government that will transform Vihiga’s sporting landscape and unlock new opportunities for our youth. Together with H.E. President @WilliamsRuto,” Mudavadi stated.

According to Mudavadi, the project, which will be implemented by the Kenya Defence Forces, is scheduled for completion within the next nine months, marking a major step forward in expanding modern sports infrastructure across the country.
In addition, Mudavadi also assured residents affected by the construction of the Stadium of strict and fair compensation, which he said will be effected within the next two months in line with the government’s commitment.
“I also assured affected landowners that due process will be strictly followed and fair compensation will be effected within the next two months, in line with Government commitments,” he added.
“As we break ground, we also remember those who envisioned this stadium but are no longer with us. Today, their dream begins to take shape, and Vihiga moves closer to a future defined by opportunity, talent and progress,” Mudavadi added.
