The Royal Bus Service has issued an update following a freak accident near Lela along the Kisumu-Busia Highway on Monday, August 11, 2025.

In the update, the bus company indicated that the accident was caused by the trailer, which was overtaking at a bend.

“We wish to confirm that one of our buses, registration no. KDQ 792F, travelling from Busia to Mombasa, was involved in an accident along the Busia highway that was caused by a truck overtaking on a corner,” the bus company stated.

Passengers transferred

While police reports indicate that one person succumbed to the injuries sustained in the impact of the collision of the two vehicles, the bus company notes that one person sustained a minor injury and was treated at a local health facility.

“We wish to confirm that it was only one passenger who sustained minor injuries and has been treated at a nearby medical facility,” the bus company states.

It further reveals that the rest of the passengers bound for Mombasa were transferred to another bus and that they were proceeding with their journey.

More details

“The rest of the passengers were transferred to Dreamline Express and are currently proceeding with their journey to Mombasa,” the bus service said.

“The government agencies are on the scene, and a more detailed report will be issued by the authorities.”

Traffic police officers were seen at the accident scene controlling the snarl-up that had been created by the accident.

Confirming the accident, Nyanza regional traffic police officer Peter Maina indicated that one person had died while six others were injured.

“We have lost one person, and six other people have been seriously injured. Among them are three men and three children,” Maina said.

“We are in the process of assessing those who have sustained minor injuries in the accident.”

Part of the passenger bus was wrecked by the long-distance truck as passengers were evacuated from the bus, which had veered off the road near Lela in Kisumu County.

The rear side of the bus was completely damaged from the impact of the collision, painting a grim picture of the state of the passengers inside.
