Evacuation calls

The urgency of the evacuation is stressed by recent data from the Ministry of Interior and National Administration, which has mapped 59 flood-prone areas across Tana River’s five subcounties.

In the report by the Ministry, the highest concentration of risk lies in the Tana Delta subcounty, where 32 areas are noted as highly vulnerable.

Specific locations on the watchlist include: Tana Delta: Feji, Kiembe, Kipini Division, Ozi Mtangani, and Salama. · Tana River subcounty: Masabubu, Rhoka, Bondeni and Mororo.  Bangale: Bura, Madogo, and Ziwani .

As of May 2, 2026, authorities confirmed that at least 18 people died across Kenya due to flooding, with the Eastern region recording the highest number of fatalities.

In neighboring Garissa county, the crisis is already severe. Reports indicate that at least 10,000 households have been displaced, with many residents seeking refuge at the Farmers Training Centre and local police stations after water swept through villages like Bulla Punda and Bulla Sheikh .

Meanwhile,Tana River Governor Dhadho Godhana has issued an urgent directive for all residents living along the river banks and in low-lying areas to vacate immediately.

On his part, Godhana has assured residents that the county is prepared. Beyond immediate relief, he announced that the construction of low-cost housing in safer village clusters is set to begin this month to provide long-term solutions for communities frequently displaced by annual floods.

As the rain continues to fall upcountry, authorities are pleading with the public to stop treating the evacuation orders as routine.
