Raila heads to US for leaders’ summit
Azimio la Umoja – One Kenya coalition leader Raila Odinga is set to travel to the US today for a week-long stay.
In a statement, Raila will be leaving on Saturday, December 10 for Washington, DC, to join other African and world leaders for the US-African Leaders Summit.
“Raila Odinga is set to leave the country late Saturday, December 10, 2022, for a one-week visit to the US,” the statement reads in parts.
Raila is expected to arrive in Washington on Monday, December 12, 2022, for the summit that runs from December 13-15.
This follows the cancellation of his parallel Jamhuri Day celebrations on Monday, December 12.
While speaking in Tana River yesterday, the former Prime Minister noted that he did not act out of fear but had to honour the invitation.
“I cancelled the Jamhuri day rally after I got an invitation from the US Govt to travel to the US tomorrow for the US-Africa Summit. Some people are now saying that I was cowed. I do not fear any human being. I only fear God,” he noted.
Odinga will jet back into the country by December 18 and is expected to continue with his scheduled public consultative meetings.
The U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit will bring over 50 leaders from across the African continent.
The Summit will show how persistently committed the United States is to Africa, underline the significance of U.S.-Africa relations, and highlight how closely they are working together on common global priorities.
The Summit will build on shared values to better foster new economic engagement, strengthen the U.S.-Africa commitment to democracy and human rights, mitigate the effects of COVID-19 and future pandemics, work cooperatively to strengthen regional and global health, promote food security, advance peace and security, respond to the climate crisis, and strengthen ties with diaspora communities.
